Position Overview: The Clinical Pediatric/Neonatology Pharmacist is responsible for the provision of safe, effective, appropriate and cost-efficient medication therapy to patients in area of pediatrics and neonatology. The Clinical Specialist will ensure that pharmacists and pharmacy technicians receive ongoing training, competency assessment and performance improvement activities to improve delivery of pharmaceutical care to these patients. In addition, the pediatric/neonatology specialist will work with pediatricians and neonatologists to develop and maintain policies and procedures that improve patient safety.
Responsibilities: A. Assures safe, appropriate, cost effective therapies for pediatric/neonatal patients according to established policies, procedures and protocols under general direction of the Clinical Manager and/or Director of Pharmacy1. Develops, enforces and maintains policies and procedures that promote and enhance patient outcomes through safe, effective, cost-efficient and appropriate medication therapy use for pediatric/neonatal patients. 2. Assists in development and maintenance of a pediatric formulary such as cough/cold preparations, surfactants, steroids, etc., approved by the medical staff.3. Coordinates programs designed to minimize medication errors, adverse drug reactions and medication misuse with regards to preparations for pediatrics and neonatology through improved processes related to medication distribution (i.e. syringes, concentrations, etc.).4. Coordinates, facilitates and promotes education, training, competency assessment and performance improvement of pharmacists, technicians and healthcare professionals in the interpretation of pediatric/neonatology orders and the preparation and administration of these products.5. Serves as principal advisor and/or member of hospital committees involved in evaluating pediatric/neonatology issues such as treatment algorithms, algorithms for complications due to medications, and maintaining the pediatric formulary.6. Displays personal initiative and advocacy of clinical pharmacy programs, planning and services to foster and improve inter- and intra-professional communications with appropriate attention and management of existing facility mission, vision and values.7. Rounds with neonatologists in the NICU.8. Be responsible for conducting 1-2 MUEs/year in the area of pediatrics/neonatology as directed by Clinical Manager and/or Director of Pharmacy.10. Prepares appropriate reports and follow-up documentation to the Director of Clinical Services as requested on performance improvement initiatives related to pediatrics/neonatology.11. Maintains professional knowledge and skills related to clinical pharmacy through participation in selected pharmacy organization(s).12. Performs other related duties as assigned by Clinical Manager/Director of Pharmacy.13. Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations.14. Be responsible in maintaining records and policies and procedures for any clinical studies or investigational studies that involve medications in pediatric or neonate areas.C. Integrates the department into the organization's primary functions.3. Develops, implements and maintains a pediatric program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.4. Participates in all committees/functions that relate to pediatric/neonatology issues required by the organization. 5. Establishes productive collaborative relationships with pediatricians/neonatologists, nurses and other health care personnel who are associated with pediatric/neonatology issues within the organization.D. Maintains competency required for current job title/position.1. Maintains current pharmacist license. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Sustains professional competency and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars and professional organizations.II.
