About the Position:
This position is located at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR), a U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) asset and is collocated with the San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC), Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The USAISR is dedicated to BOTH laboratory and clinical trauma research. Its mission is to provide requirements-driven combat casualty care medical solutions and products for injured service members, from self-aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations; provide state-of-the-art trauma, burn, and critical care to Department of Defense beneficiaries around the world and civilians in our trauma region; and provide Burn Special Medical Augmentation Response Teams.
Fort Sam Houston is located in beautiful San Antonio, TX with a warm climate, close proximity to beaches, ! and a population of approximately 1 million people. Additional! ly, there are many surrounding smaller towns within a 30 mile radius including Universal City, Converse, Kirby, Shertz, and Cibolo. The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is participating in an alternative personnel system known as the USAMRMC Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP). The DB-2 pay band incorporates the former GS 05 step1 to the GS 12 step 10 levels. In keeping with the demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within this pay band equivalent will not receive an immediate pay increase. Future pay increases within the pay band will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.
This is a DOD Demonstration Project position.
As a result of sequestration and budget shortfalls, Army is furloughing most of its employees for some amount of time during fiscal year 2013. An em! ployee in this position MAY be subject to furlough. If applicable, specific information regarding the administrative furlough will be provided to the individual selected for this position.

Moving expenses will not be paid. DUTIES:
As a Nurse Specialist you will: Provide direct clinical and related services to patients and clients to include examining, testing, diagnosis, treatment, therapy, casework, counseling, and disability evaluation. Perform highly specialized critical care nursing to adults, geriatric and pediatric patients who have sustained burn injuries involving up to 100% of total body surface area. Provide comprehensive nursing care to burn injured patients which includes continual assessment, planning and evaluation of care; the development of a comprehensive plan of care; and the recognition of physiological and behavior! al changes and their significance to patient welfare. Administer medica! tions to include research drugs, and operating special equipment such as cardiac monitors and air fluidized beds. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Registration: Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. An applicant who has graduated from an approved nursing educational program within the past 12 months may be appointed pending State registration as a professional nurse within 6 months of appointment.
Specialized Experience: One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demo! nstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which includes providing comprehensive nursing care to burn patients of all ages; developing care plans; and/or providing direct clinical and related services to patients and clients.
OR Education Substitution: Successful completion of at least a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree that is directly related to the work of the position.
OR Combination of Experience and Education: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education in excess of 18 hours (total semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percenta! ge must equal at least 100% to qualify.
Only degrees from an a! ccredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for appointment to this position will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Tentatively selected applicants will be required to sign DA Form 5019 (Condition of employment for certain Civilian positions identified as Critical under the Department of Army Drug-Free Workplace Program) requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing. All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
