I. Position Summary:
Assists the Unit Director with the responsibility and accountability for the management of the unit. Emphasis on independent decision making related to the nursing process. Demonstrates the ability to provide consistent direction for all nursing personnel in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating nursing activities.

II. Position Relationships:
A. Responsible to: Divisional Nursing Director and Unit Director

B. Workers Supervised: Unit’s professional and non-licensed personnel

C. Interrelationships: Works closely with patients, families and health

care team. Frequent interaction with unit staff, hospital departments and administration.

III. Responsibilities and Authorities:
The Charge Nurse has a responsibility to:
A. Performs other duties as assigned by the department's management staff.

B. As patient care and/or Hospital need dictates, both the assigned shift and work station may be changed by the department.

C. Participates in and promotes the “I CARE Advantage” service philosophy of Integrity, Customer Centered, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

D. Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

E. Provide a collaborative environment.

F. Practice effective interpersonal skills and utilizes the established channels of communication.

G. Develop individual goals for professional growth.

H. Participate in developing, implementing and evaluating unit goals and objectives, in accordance with organizational philosophy.

I. Assumes responsibility and accountability for unit management, during their assigned shift.

IV. Performance Factors Used to Evaluate Employee:
A. Assists with staffing the unit. Administers family centered patient care to the following patient age categories (circle all that may apply):

1. newborn/infant 4. adult

2. pediatric (0-16-y.o.) 5. geriatric

3. adolescent.

B. Acts as a role model and clinical resource person.

C. Demonstrates leadership skills, prioritization, organization, decision making, delegation, team-building, flexibility and accountability for actions taken.

D. Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, expresses ideas clearly, and follows the appropriate channels of communication.

E. Anticipates patient care needs and intervenes appropriately implementing the nursing process.

F. Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills accurately and within a reasonable time frame.

G. Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care on the basis of relevant data.

H. Using a current awareness of the abilities and limitations of each nursing staff member makes appropriate assignments, reflecting patient activities, and individual nurse competencies.

I. Promotes a positive work environment.

J. Participates in Performance Improvement Activities.

V. Qualifications:
A. Education:
Hold a current Texas permit or license as a Registered Nurse. BSN preferred.

B. Training and Experience:
1. BLS Certification.

2. 18 months full time experience as an RN preferred. If less than 18 months experience, administrative approval must be obtained.

3. NRP within 6 months of hire.

4. EKG within 6 months of hire.

5. Hospital and Nursing orientation within 3 months of hire.

6. NICU competencies within 3 months of hire:

  • QS Computerized Charting
  • Care of the neonate
  • Care of the premature neonate
  • Care of the ventilated neonate
VI. Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
A. Ability to perform:
1. Heavy lifting

2. Sustained standing and walking

3. Work under stress

4. Varied work hours and shifts.

B. Exposure to infectious diseases.
