Job Description

I. Position Summary:
Functions as a staff nurse under the guidance and supervision of a! n experienced R.N. Performs routine patient care assignments and carries out established nursing procedures utilizing the nursing process.

II. Position Relationships:
A. Responsible to: Divisional Nursing Director, Unit Director and

Charge Nurse

B. Workers Supervised: None

C. Interrelationships: Works closely with patients, families and health

Care team. Frequent interaction with unit staff, medical staff, vendors and other hospital departments.

III. Responsibilities and Authorities:
A. Performs other duties as assigned by the department's management staff but not limited to neonatal transport, relief charge and attending of high risk deliveries.

B. As patient care and/or Hospital need dictates, both the assigned shift and work station may be changed by the department.

C. Participates in and promotes the “I CARE Advantage” service philosophy of Integrity, C! ustomer Centered, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

D. Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

E. Participate in the education of patient’s family, significant others and peers.

F. Use decision-making and leadership skills to effectively manage patient problems.

I. Participate in achieving unit, departmental and organizational goals.

J. Delegates appropriate tasks to LVN’s, GVN’s, and non-licensed personnel on the unit.

IV. Performance Factors Used to Evaluate Employee:
A. Implement the Nursing Process in ! health care delivery to the following patient age categories (circle all that may apply)

B. Assesses patient status systematically to anticipate and to respond to changes in clinical condition.

C. Collects pertinent patient and family data. Documents, modifies plan of care, and processes data appropriately and in a timely manner.

D. Integrates and maintains a Patient Plan of Care/PIE charting.

E. Demonstrates effective time management in prioritizing and delegating the implementation of patient care.

F. Demonstrates ability to perform technical skills accurately and within a reasonable period.

G. Anticipates patient care problems and makes interventions based on an understanding of the physiological and psychosocial processes and takes appropriate follow-up action with assigned acuity levels.

H. Participates! in the education of patient, family, significant others, and peers.
I. Practice effective interpersonal skills and utilize the established channels of communications and chain of command.

J. Participates in Performance Improvement activities.

V. Qualifications:
A. Education:
1. Hold a current Texas permit or license as a Registered Nurse. BSN preferred. RN Certification in Neonatal Intensive Care preferred.

B. Training and Experience:
1. BLS Certification.

2. One year appropriate experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting preferred.

3. NRP within 6 months of hire.

4. EKG within 6 months of hire.

5. Hospital and Nursing orientation within 3 months of hire.

6. Minimal lift training within 3 months of hire.

7. NICU competencies within 3 months of hire:

  • QS Computerized Charting
  • Care of the neonate
  • Care of the premature neonate
  • Care of the ventilated neonate
  • 8. NICU competencies to be completed within 1 year of hire:
    • Attending High Risk Deliveries
    9. NICU competencies to be completed after 1 year of hire date (requires charge nurse recommendation):

    • Relief charge nurse
    • Caring of Infant during Neonatal Transport
    VI. Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    A. Ability to perform:
    1. Heavy lifting

    2. Sustained standing and walking

    3. Work under stress

    4. Varied work hours and shifts

    B. May encounter exposure to infectious diseases.

    C. May involve travelling in an ambulance or helicopter during patient transport.
