Responsible for overseeing all aspects of daily therapeutic programming for patients ages 8-12 and maintaining an environment that promotes health.
< b> The PATH Program:
The PATH Program at UT Physicians is a unique day treatment program for children and adolescents with complex medical issues who also have behavioral or emotional challenges. Participants in the program may have gastrointestinal illness, diabetes, asthma, seizures, chronic pain, somatoform disorders, or other complex health problems.
Children spend an average of three to five weeks in the program, arriving Monday through Friday at 7:30 a.m. and leaving at 3:00 p.m. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are served each day. Each child receives 90 minutes of educational instruction, coordinated with his or her home school, every day in order to maintain academic progress. Separate therapeutic âmilieuâ areas allow us to group patients by age and developmental level.
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Assists in the ongoing development and evaluation of the divisionâs outpatient program as it relates to recr eational therapy needs and processes.
2. Assists the Lead Recreational Therapist in ensuring the program maintains an environment that is safe and promotes the health and wellness of the patient.
3. Responsible for daily therapeutic recreational programming for designated program patients.
4. Conducts skills training and assists with group therapy as needed.
5. Works closely with the interdisciplinary team for coordination of care. Attends regular interdisciplinary team meetings.
6. Maintains appropriate clinical documentation on a daily basis.
7. Provides direct support to recreational therapy interns and recreational therapy practicum students and volunteers as needed.
8. Stays up-to-date on evidence-based interventions and promising practices for the treatment of patients and families with chronic medical conditions and mental health diagnosis.
9. Assists in the coordination of the divisionâs volunteer program
10. Performs other dutie s as assigned.

Certification/Skills:
- Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC); or
- Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Texas Certified (TRS/TXC); or
- Certified Child Life Specialist by the Association of Child Life Professionals.
Minimum Education:
- Bachelorâs degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Bachelorâs degree with an emphasis in therapeutic recreation or related field or
- Bachelor's degree in a mental health-related field (psychology, social work)
Minimum Experience:
- One (1) year of experience with a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist Certification (NCTRC) or Certified Child Life Specialist Certification; or
- Two (2) years of experience working with school-aged children
- Experience with art or music therapy is preferred
Additional Information:
- Full-Time / Non-Exempt Position
- Hours: Roughly 7am - 4pm
- Location: 6410 Fannin Street (UT Professional Building)
- The treatment team includes at least some of the following professionals: a pediatrician, a psychiatrist, a psychologist or therapist, a nurse, a nutritionist, a child life specialist, a social worker, and a teacher.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
